Observations on Waving
Shortly after I started riding my first motorcycle, I noticed other riders were waving at me as we approached each other on the road. This phenomenon was new to me, and I wondered if there were some rules of etiquette I should follow. My Harley-Davidson owner’s manual was of no help.

Some of the questions I had were as follows:
  • Who should wave first?
  • Should I give a high wave or a low wave?
  • Some riders gave me a victory/peace sign, some pointed at the ground, and a few pointed at. Is something wrong?
  • Is it rude to point at another rider?
  • I tried to observe what my HOG brothers and sisters were doing. Some only waved at other Harley riders. That seems to be snobbish and elitist.
  • What about motor scooters?
  • If you are shifting gears or in the middle of a tight turn, is it okay to return the wave with a nod of your head?
  • If you have a passenger, is it acceptable to have him or her return the wave for you, or should you both wave?
  • If you are passing/overtaking another rider to your right, should you wave?
  • Should you wave if a car is immediately behind you, or on your left and slightly behind you?

On the subject of pointing, another biker came up behind me once and honked his horn and pointed at me. I smiled and waved back. It was only after he continued honking and pointing that I realized my saddlebag was open!

And finally, is the “wave” suspended when you are at a large rally with thousands of other riders? If so, when the rally is over and you are heading home, how far do you have to go before you resume the “wave”?

I have heard there are some riders who actually don’t believe in waving. I guess if you encounter one of these riders you should refer to my first question.
