BMW Motorrad founded the segment of large touring enduro motorcycles with the launch of the BMW R 80 G/S thirty years ago. Featuring the world’s first single swing-arm rear suspension, the G/S -- the “G” stands for “Gelände” (terrain), and the “S” stands for “Strasse” (street or road) – earned victories in the Paris-Dakar races of the 1980’s under Hubert Auriol and Gaston Rahier, and quickly became the mount of choice for world adventure riders like Dr. Gregory Frazier, Helge Pedersen and film star Ewan McGregor.
“Thirty years ago, it might have been hard to imagine that a dirt-capable bike might end up with 110 horsepower, ABS brakes, electronic suspension adjustment and - believe it or not - traction control,” observed Pieter de Waal, Vice President, BMW Motorrad USA. “Yet despite all of these innovative, technological refinements, the adventurous, end-of-the-world spirit of the original G/S lives on in today’s GS models.”
Today BMW Motorrad USA offers five enduro models in its product range, each one setting new standards for an unprecedented synthesis of on-road and off-road capabilities.
This year, in celebration of this momentous anniversary and industry milestone, BMW is offering Special Edition GS models: the BMW F 800 GS, the BMW R 1200 GS and the R 1200 GS Adventure.
All three Special Edition models are slated for a worldwide launch in June 2010 and have the following Special Edition features:
BMW F 800 GS
BMW R 1200 GS
Standard Features:
BMW R 1200 GS Adventure
