Motorcycle racing at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, July 16-18, 2010

Competitors from AMA Pro Road Racing, some of the most daring and talented riders in the world, made Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course their home this past weekend for the Honda Super Cycle Weekend presented by Dunlop Tire.

Local favorite Larry Pegram, made his way to Lexington, Ohio, along with top competitors Tommy Hayden, Jake Zemke, Josh Hays, Danny Eslick, Ben Bostrom, Steve Rapp, and Bobby Fong. Four classes of riders, including National Guard American SuperBike, Daytona SportBike presented by AMSOIL, SuperSport and the new Vance & Hines XR1200, were featured.  

Thrilling passes, and frequent side-by-side competition, not to mention spectacular wipeouts by contending racers, led to some of the best racing in decades.  

In the Daytona Sportbike Race on Sunday, Martin Cardenas and Josh Herrin, podium finishers in Saturday’s races, crashed and lost valuable time and position in the final standings.

The AMA Pro SuperSport class is designed as a proving ground for new, young talent to show their skills as riders on smaller 600cc motorcycles that also have very few performance modifications.

The AMA Pro Daytona SportBike class, with roots in the Formula Xtreme class, provides very close competition with a sensible cost/performance combination and puts the emphasis on the ridsrs’ abilities. Eligible bikes are Aprilia RSV1000R, Buell 1125 R, Ducati 848, Honda CBR1000RR, Kawasaki ZX-6R, Suzuki GSX-R600, Triumph Daytona 675, and Yamaha YZF-R6.

Air Jordan's Team Bikes

The AMA Pro National Guard American SuperBike class was created in 1976 as a showcase for the motorcycle industries new era of big and powerful street bikes, the class featured slightly modified versions of the motorcycles the public could buy right off the showroom floor, Each major motorcycle manufacturer has taken turns in upping the ante by coming out with more and more power and technology. Eligible bikes are Suzuki GSX-R1000, Yamaha R1, Kawasaki ZX-10, Honda CBR1000RR, Aprilia RSV1000R, Buell1123R, and Buell 1123RR.

H-D XR1200 Race Bikes

The Vance & Hines XR1200 Series made its debut last month at Road America in the home state of Harley-Davidson. Eligible motorcycles are the Harley-Davidson XR1200 with attractive and efficient performance enhancements from Vance & Hines.

  • Third – Jake Holden

Off the track...

Fans got a chance to meet their favorite riders up close during the autograph session. In addition, fans had the unique opportunity to participate in a grid walk before the SuperSport races. Fans could also participate in the annual Dealer Ride, to experience the track as racers do, by riding their bike on the track prior to Sunday’s races.

It was a hot day of competition and very entertaining for motorcycle race fans! 

Behind the scenes...

Racers are now on their way to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in Salinas, California to continue racing on July 23rd through 25th.
