This February 17th, the 2007 Sandblast Rally, the first rally for motorcycles in the United States to follow official F.I.M. WRC rules, will take place in Cheraw, South Carolina. Part of the National Auto Sport Association (NASA) Rally Moto Program, the Sandblast Rally features riders navigating around an extended course interspersed with timed, full speed sections called “special stages” as well as transit liason stages run at normal speeds.

MaxBMW of Troy, New York, will be sending a team of at least ten riders, with most aboard HP2 Enduros, some of which they sold to riders who wanted to compete in the rally. The team is the first to participate under the umbrella of BMW's new grass-roots racing effort, Xplor Racing. Other BMW bikes will also be running in the event, including an R 80 GS, two R 100 GS PDs, as well as a few F 650 GS’s. Each rider on the team is also a member of XPLOR, and the Sandblast is the first of many planned grass roots racing events that will dovetail with this unique resource for BMW riders.

“Sandblast is about the closest you can get to Dakar-style racing in the Eastern United States,” stated Anders Green, organizer of the event. “It's got both deep sand and fast sections.” The Sandblast has always been a car-only event, but now, happily, or not so happily, its infamous vehicle-swallowing sand is available for two-wheeled competitors.

The Rally Moto is already attracting major interest in the motorcycling community, as it is shaping up to be a BMW vs. KTM battle in the above 650 cc class. In the 250-450 cc class Suzuki is well-represented with DR 400s in the field. “We are looking forward to running the bikes,” continued Green, “It will be interesting how the event finishes, as it is unclear which classes will have the best advantage. However, it will be a challenge for everyone, and surely a great start to what will be a new, different, and extreme series of events for the bike community.”
