Maverick’s Notes
The fourth day of the 105th Ride Home is our first really fine day in paradise. Starting point Billings…ending point Billings. So, we did a 250 mile round trip to Cody, WY, via Red Lodge, MT, and through the foothills of the Beartooth Mountain range. What a day! Sunny skies and perfect motorcycling hovering near 70 degrees much of the day.
Featured in today’s notes are the motorcyclists who love, purchase, and ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Following are excerpts from just a few of many along with the models they ride and their reasons for riding to Milwaukee. In some cases they’ve told us why they are not on the 105th Ride Home.
- Len and Lisa, of Washington, ride a 2007 Screamin’ Eagle Ultra. Len spoke with pride for his bike and recovery from a liver transplant one and one half years ago. His license plate reads “BIONIC,” symbolic of his “second life.” Len is obviously happy to be alive and views the 105th Ride Home as an opportunity of assure himself that he is fully recovered and to affiliate with a “brotherhood” of motorcyclists.
- Wild Bill and Jerry of Wisconsin and Frank of Washington, met at Harley-Davidson’s 100th Anniversary and have stayed in touch. Riding in the 105th Ride Home is a reunion of sorts. Frank says, “everybody dies…not everybody lives!”
- Beth and Ed ride into Beartooth Harley-Davidson in Billings on a 1930 Harley-Davidson. This is not a long ride motorcycle although in excellent condition. Beth and Ed have ridden many miles together – to Sturgis 30+ years – and to Harley-Davidson’s 95th and 100 year anniversaries. Ed says, “gotta go!” He will ride an Electra Glide Classic and Beth will meet up with him in Milwaukee.
- Al rides a custom bike called Mystified. It is his third custom built motorcycle and what a beauty. He will not be riding the 105th. While he didn’t say it, he gave the impression that he is too busy thinking about his next custom creation.
- Glenn and Bob, co-workers from north of Seattle are on their first Harley-Davidson Anniversary Ride. They both ride Ultras and love the feel of big touring motorcycles. They look forward to the coming day with great anticipation.
- Josh, an executive with MetLife, and Janice, live in Billings and would love to join the 105th. Having recently traveled to Sturgis, Josh says it is time to earn a living. Josh owns a Road King.
- Bob is currently shopping for the ideal Ultra. He is not currently riding a bike, but will become a Harley-Davidson owner soon.
- Country, from California, and Bob, from Las Vegas, ride identical 2008 Screamin’ Eagle Ultras. Bob’s perspective is a variation of a fairly common theme among motorcyclist: he got rid of a woman, bought a motorcycle, and is now taking the journey he didn’t have the opportunity to take before.

- Milo rides a “Rat Bike” and loves to make people smile while adding levity to each day. Check out the “Rat Bike” photos in today’s gallery and you will understand. A picture is indeed worth a thousand words.
Radio’s Notes
It was a beautiful, sunny day in Billings, and what better thing to do on a sunny than ride. Some groups rode over Beartooth Pass, others rode to the Custer’s Last Stand Battlefield, still others rode to Cody WY or another favorite area ride. What they all had in common was enjoying the warm sunshine and the beautiful scenery this area has to offer. We rode with a small group that rode to Cody WY via Red Lodge MT, and the ride was awesome.
Beartooth Harley-Davidson hosted a huge party from 4-10 p.m. and concert featuring three groups including Whiskey River from Nashville. There was also food, beverages, and opportunities for everyone to share their ride stories. The 105th riders are becoming very diverse with riders joining from around the country each excited to share their story of their ride to Billings. It is interesting to see the enthusiasm they have for riding and anticipation for the ride into Milwaukee. Me? I’m just excited to be wearing clean jeans and see the sun. Life is good.
