The 18th Annual Ride To Work Day for motorcyclists is June 15, 2009. Ride your motorcycle or scooter on this day to demonstrate:
- The number of motorcyclists on roadways.
- That motorcyclists are from all occupations and all walks of life.
- That motorcyclists can reduce traffic and parking congestion in large cities.
- That motorcycles are for transportation as well as recreation.
- That motorcycling contributes to the good of society.
According to Andy Goldfine; “Motorcycle riders are a minority. Commuting and transportation riders are a minority within a minority. Motorcycles will someday be more widely recognized as good solutions to many social, urban and environmental problems. In our technological era, increases in motorcycle use can become a benefit for everyone. Motorcycles are safe and fun...and riding everywhere is a social good. Everyday motorcycling and commuting has an enormous unrealized cultural potential. We want to carry these ideas forward and teach them to as many road users as we can. I start by choosing to ride to work”
Ride To Work, a 501(c4), not for profit whose mission is to: advocate and support the use of motorcycles and scooters for transportation, while providing information about everyday motorcycle/scooter riding to the public. It is the Organization’s belief that on June fifteenth of this year, the number of motorcycles and scooters on roads and highways will more than double as many riders become two-wheeled commuters to help demonstrate that riding is an efficient, economical form of personal transportation which makes parking easier and helps traffic flow better. This annual worldwide event, involves riders of all ages and occupations, and from all walks of life.
According to the United States Census Bureau and the Department of Transportation, over eighty million cars and light trucks are used for daily commuting on American roads, and about 200,000 motorcycles and scooters are a regular part of this mix. On Ride To Work Day, the practical side of riding becomes more visible as a larger number of Americas 8,000,000+ cycles are ridden to work.
It is estimated that the number of commuting motorcyclists will double on Ride To Work Day and if every work day were Ride To Work Day, the estimated reduction of gallons of fuel used would approximate 18,000,000 gallons per year.
