Sturgis Motorcycle Rally Officials anticipated a smaller rally, in 2007, when compared to previous years. Estimates range in the 400,000 to 450,000 range. The peak year was 2000 when approximately 630,000 bikers visited the Black Hills of South Dakota. But the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has a special ambiance in spite of reported lower numbers.
Most bikers at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally ride a Harley-Davidson brand motorcycle and many are joined by a spouse or significant other. Many are in their forties and fifties and perhaps not riding as fast as they once did. Generally, rally attendees can be heard saying “excuse me,” “thank you,” and “please.” Many can be observed opening doors for others during entry and exit into and out of local establishments.
