Why motorcycle accidents happen - Third Edition

Have you ever wondered why accidents happen?  Following are excerpts from accident reporting during January, 2008. They are randomly selected and most, although not all, appear to be attributable to motorcycle operator error; including lack of anticipation, proper control and judgment.  With extra effort, could all have been avoided by the motorcycle operator?!

·         Fatality in Warren County, Kentucky – The victim was wearing a helmet at the time of the single vehicle accident.  Reportedly, the motorcycle was southbound on Rockfield-Browning Road just before 7 p.m. when the operator apparently lost control, left the edge of the roadway and ended up in a ditch.

·         Fatality in North Palm Beach County, Florida – While traveling east on the State Road 710 Bridge in Indiantown about 7:35 p.m., an unknown white vehicle (hit-and-run) approached from behind and hit the back of the motorcycle, causing both operator (serious injuries) and passenger (fatal) to be ejected from the motorcycle onto the shoulder of the road.

·         Minor injuries in Houston, Texas – High winds caused the motorcycle operator to lose control of his motorcycle on a Friday afternoon. The Kawasaki Vulcan ran off Highway B and struck a ditch about three miles east of Houston.

·         Fatality in Australia – Just before 7p.m. a man in his late twenties was killed in a motobike accident on the Bass Highway near Devonport. Police believe the motorcyclist was traveling in the right-hand lane when he lost control of the bike and crashed into a wire road barrier.

·         Fatality in Prichard, Alabama – A 43-year-old man died in the afternoon when he lost control of the Suzuki motorcycle he was riding in Prichard and struck a car. Authorities said the operator had been traveling east at a high rate of speed.

·         Fatality near Birmingham, Alabama – Area police departments mourn the loss of a fellow Officer who died on Sunday after he, on his personal motorcycle, hit a deer on I-65 north near Valley Dale Road in Hoover.

·         Portland, Oregon motorcycle officer injured – The Officer was heading west on Northeast Sandy Boulevard about 7:45 a.m. when he collided with an oncoming Chevrolet Malibu that was trying to turn left onto Northeast 28th Avenue. Witnesses told investigators that the officer had a green light to go through the intersection at the time.

·         Fatality in Louisville, Kentucky – A motorcyclist (not wearing a helmet) was traveling northbound on the Clark Memorial Bridge about 7:15 p.m. when his motorcycle clipped a vehicle, throwing him from his bike. Police believe speed was a factor.

·         Corona, California fatalityA 23-year-old man died when the motorcycle he was riding crashed into a tree, police said. The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. at Liberty Street and California Avenue. Police report that preliminary investigation indicates the motorcycle, a 2005 Honda CBR, was traveling at a high rate of speed when the crash occurred.

·         Fatality in Marietta, GeorgiaA Marietta woman (a passenger) was killed when she was hit by a car after being ejected from a motorcycle when the motorcycle was laid on its side during operation.

·         Tampa Bay, Florida fatalities – A motorcycle and an SUV collided at 11:00 a.m. on the morning of January 7, killing the operators of both vehicles. The motorcycle ran into the SUV on U.S. 19 in Palm Harbor and then burst into flames. Witnesses said the motorcycle was going over 100 mph when it hit the 1994 Chevrolet Suburban that was turning in front of it.
