Introduction

Gerbing’s T5 Heated Gloves, with Microwire technology, are made for the extreme cold temperatures and inclement weather conditions; e.g., rain, sleet, and hail, that motorcyclists experience while riding a motorcycle. In fact, while dressed in Gerbing’s heated vest and gloves, I have ridden comfortably for miles with the temperature at minus 25 degrees (including wind chill).

Gerbing developed Microwire in response to the specifications of a contract with the military. In this case, it was with Navy Special Ops, although Gerbing has and continues to work with all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces.  They are proud of their success in helping to keep America’s uniformed men and women warm.

A pair of Gerbing’s T5 Heated Gloves is packaged with a glove harness to connect the gloves to the power source and a battery harness to carry power from the battery to the harness.

The T5 is a very technical-looking glove.

First Impression

Gerbing claims to make the “World’s Warmest Clothing.” The T5 gloves are: ample, comfortable, custom fitted, put together well, made of quality materials, look nice, and are flexible, in addition to being warm. The T5 is powered by Gerbing’s Microwire. It uses powerful single wires – with hundreds and hundreds of stainless steel micro strands in each wire.

Microwire incorporates Gerbing’s patented process of micro-sized stainless steel fibers intertwined and encased in a waterproof coating. The Microwire is then woven into a heating matrix that is positioned throughout the product. The T5 produces heat that is not as tightly focused and has more insulation providing a layering effect, to be efficient in cold conditions.

  • Warmth: When I first put these gloves on and plugged into the motorcycle’s electronic system, the heat was immediate. This was notable!

  •  Ample: the gloves are light weight, at less than one pound, but are 12 inches in length, 4 ½ inches wide when measured across the knuckles.   The gloves slip right over the cuff of your leather jacket and the Velcro closure eliminates any possibility for cold air infiltration into the glove or up your sleeve for that matter.
  • Comfortable: The T5 gloves are very comfortable in the griping position and there is a strategically placed non-slip pad to ensure good contact with the motorcycle’s controls. In addition, strategically placed “pads” opposite the palms provide added protection.

  •  Flexibility: Flexibility built into the manufacturing process so leather or fabric stretch is minimal. These gloves are designed so the grip position feels as normal as when at rest. Griping a motorcycle’s handgrips for miles may be a bit uncomfortable with or without gloves. Hence, some motorcyclists will rest their hands, one at a time, for brief periods. This is normal, but the Gerbing T5 does not cause hands to fatigue in the gripped position.
  • Custom fitted: Finger length is customized so that each finger is sufficient – but not excessive – in length to fit your fingers. The Velcro strap is easily positioned to hold the gloves where the motorcyclist intends and the cuff large enough to easily incorporate you jacket sleeve.
  • Put together well: all seams, baffling, and stitches are uniform – providing strength for extreme adventures.
  • Quality materials: the leather is soft, supple and it smells good. All other fabrics are compatible and selected to achieve specified outcomes; i.e., to create a warm and dry environment while operating a motorcycle in what may otherwise be very cold, wet and uncomfortable conditions.

  • Stylish: Style is not critical, but these gloves really do look nice. The gloves are black as you can see in the photos, but Gerbing created a glove with an appearance that integrates well with other motorcycling clothing.
Features

Patented Microwire heating technology – Microwire incorporates a patented process for using micro-sized conductive fibers that are intertwined and encased in a Teflon protective coating. The Microwire is then woven into a heating matrix that is placed in the gloves.

  • Heats the entire length of each finger including the thumb, and the back of your hand

  • Lifetime Warranty on the gloves’ Micowire heating technology
  • Specifications:

Heat – Microwire

  • Source – 12 volts DC
  • Current – 2.2 amps
  • Watts – 27
Operation/Application

The 12v gloves are designed to be powered by a 12VDC electrical system. The power consumption of the T5 is about 22 Watts per pair. Connection to your motorcycle is made simple by connecting directly to the vehicle’s battery or through a 12-volt accessory outlet. A wiring harness accompanies each pair of gloves from Gerbing

All of Gerbing’s 12 pieces of heated gear interconnect. Simply plug the heated gloves into the convenient hideaway plugs at the sleeves of Gerbing’s jackets or jacket liners. Gloves may also be worn by themselves: i.e., without a liner. Glove harness is also provided, at no additional cost, with the purchase of a pair of heated gloves.

We recommend treating the leather so that it repels water, especially at the stitching and seams. The T5, because it is more heavily insulated and can be worn as a winter glove when temps are cool but not cold enough to require electric heat, has a zippered compartment on the interior of the gauntlet. You can hide the electrical lead wire in this compartment when you don't need to hook the gloves up to power them. It helps keep things neat and tidy.

Value

The T5 gloves will provide years of service and comfort. Just in case there is a problem, Gerbing provides a lifetime warranty on electrical heating elements, including Microwire infrastructure.

Priced at $169.95, the Gerbing T5 may cause some to take a second look. But it doesn’t take long to become very uncomfortable on a motorcycle when rain begins and temperatures drop. MOTORCYLISTS WILL WANT TO HAVE THE T5 HANDY. The glove’s value will outweigh the cost.

Final Thoughts

Gerbing’s T5 heated gloves are comfortable and designed to keep you dry and warm. The Microwire system is the most durable and efficient heating technology ever developed.

All Gerbing products, including the T5, are quality checked at corporate headquarters in Tumwater, Washington.

The T5 is a technical and top-of-the-line 12V heated glove. It is a bit more insulated, and thus, works exceptionally well as a cool weather glove along with being an outstanding heated glove for truly cold weather. As such, its value is greater than simply the value of being a heated glove..
