HelmetLok - a locking carabiner with many usesJanuary 20, 2011
Introduction
Many motorcyclists have carabiners hanging somewhere on their bikes, on their luggage, or on some other object hanging on their bikes. I have often wondered: are these things for looks, or is there a bona fide purpose? In other words, do things need to hang on the bike as opposed to being placed in a pocket or inside luggage, etc. Oh yes, sunscreen, chap stick, keys etc. were just some of the apparently essential items attached to the carabiners, which are in turn attached to something on the bike.
Never a fan of things hanging on my bike, often in an unsecure manner, I’ve taken a ‘wait and see’ position relative to including a typical carabiner as part of my gear. Until now that is. Our friend, David Peterson at Best Rest Products introduced us to one of their new products called HelmetLok.
The HelmetLok carabiner allows motorcyclists to secure a helmet to practically any spot on a motorcycle, as long as the diameter of the attachment point is less than 1-1/8"; e.g., handlebars, frame tubes, turn signals, mirrors, etc. Unlike a typical carabiner where the latch the opens inward, restricting the size of the opening and its usefulness, the HelmetLoklatch opens OUTWARD. This allows it to fit around handlebars, frame tubes, or other parts of your motorcycle measuring up to 1-1/8" diameter. The 3-pin lock can be programmed to your own unique combination. ![]() Uses of a HelmetLok carabiner
The HelmetLok carabiner allows a motorcyclist additional options for hanging and managing (securing or deterring theft) gear while out and about on a motorcycle. Here are some examples:
![]() Operation, application
The HelmetLokis a carabiner with a twist...it LOCKS. Specially designed for motorcycle applications, it secures your helmet (or other valuable gear) and gives you peace of mind when you're away from the bike.
The latching lever contains a programmable 3-pin combination lock. Set your own personal security code (there are1,000 codes available, and you can quickly re-set the combination if needed). To secure your helmet, slip the HelmetLok around your bars, hook your helmet d-rings thru the caribiner, close the latch, and spin the combo dial. Your helmet is safe and secure. To unlock, spin the three tumblers until the code is aligned, then squeeze the release levers on the sides of the lock, and the latch opens outward. You can do it wearing gloves. HelmetLokeliminates the need to mount a permanent helmet lock or keep track of another key. If there's a place to hook the carabiner, there's always a place to lock your helmet. Value
Crafted from with a black gloss finish, the HelmetLok is strong and beefy enough to deter theft, as discussed above, but small enough to fit in your pocket or other out of the way location. It weighs only 2.1 ounces and is 3.5” long. Its value to a motorcyclist is enhanced by its multiple uses.

Summary
Are there any limitations? Well, anytime a biker secures an object by webbing, cloth, and/or soft tie; e.g., string, rope, leather, etc., locking is a bit of a misnomer if the expectation is to “keep an item or items from being stolen.” The HelmetLoc is not magic, and therefore, will not keep someone from using a knife or other tool to cut through soft ties.
However if the expectation is to deter someone from walking off with a prized helmet or other important possession, then the HelmetLok works just great. HelmetLokis not suitable for use as a weight-bearing device or for applications where life or safety is at risk. HelmetLok is patented in Australia and worldwide.
