Gerbing's NEW G3 Heated Gloves with MicrowireAugust 13, 2009
Gerbing’s pursuit to continue improving their products has earned them another home run. I like the old version of the G3 Heated Gloves so much that it is hard to imagine Gerbing found a way to improve them. But, the new Microwire technology that has been added to the G3 Heated Gloves is amazing. Gerbing developed Microwire in response to the specifications of a contract with the military. In this case, it was with Navy Special Ops, although Gerbing has and continues to work with all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. They are proud of their success in helping to keep America’s uniformed men and women warm.
If you read the other Gerbing Heated Clothing reviews on this site (Gerbing Heated Liner, Gerbing Classic Heated Gloves, and Gerbing G3 Heated Gloves-the original version), you know what a fan I am of heated clothing. Heated clothing not only extends the riding season, but contributes to a more comfortable ride. It’s lightweight; compacts to practically nothing. I never leave home without it ...ever!
![]() Comfort:
The new G3 Heated Gloves still look the same; 3-1/4” gauntlet style, gel cushioned palms with adjustable wrist closures, lightweight Thinsulate insulation, but now the leather exterior is softer, 5% softer I’m told, due to a new treatment during the tanning/drying process. The G3 glove provides an exceptionally comfortable, flexible fit that allows the managing of simple tasks, such as fasteners and zippers, with a gloved hand.
![]() ![]() As with the previous G3 heated gloves, connector cables are located on the top of each glove and the gloves can be worn by themselves or plugged into the sleeve of a Gerbing heated jacket or liner. As with all Gerbing products, heating elements come with a lifetime warranty.
![]() The length of each finger and the back of the hands are heated utilizing Gerbing’s new Microwire technology. Microwire is a ribbon of Teflon-coated wires, consisting of hundreds of microscopic heating elements, each about 12 microns thick (about ¼ the thickness of a human hair). The flexibility and durability of Microwire is unsurpassed. It is lighter and stronger than anything the military had previously tested. It’s so thin that you can’t feel the wires. And, as you would expect, Gerbing has patented Microwire.
With Microwire you feel the heat right now! And because Microwire is a ribbon, you get broader, more even heat coverage. I decided to compare the new Microwire G3 gloves against the older G3 gloves. I put the new glove on one hand, the old glove on the other, and turned them on. The difference was noticeable.
The new Microwire glove is truly an “instant on” heat. While the old G3 glove heats well, it took more time for my hand to get warm. As I experienced the two gloves heating, I was surprised at the difference. The Microwire glove feels like it is wrapping my fingers and hands with heat. It is an even heat all over my hand, and the hand in the glove with Microwire feels much warmer. Because Microwire is so thin and light, the gloves are also very comfortable.
Microwire draws no more current than the older heating systems. Even better, while Microwire is more expensive to produce, Gerbing isn’t raising the prices of its products heated by Microwire; very cool.
Quality and Value:
Gerbing quality and customer service is unbeatable. In the 1970s, Gordon Gerbing began making heated clothing for employees of his small machine shop. The story goes that several employees rode motorcycles to work all year, even through Seattle’s chilly, damp winters. Gordon noticed how uncomfortable they were and set out to find a way to keep the riders warm. His answer was clothing with heated pads that connected to the bike’s electrical system. It worked, and the rest is history.
The business continued to grow with Gerbing’s focus on quality and service, and a vision to provide innovative, high-quality products at a fair price, and most importantly, to always take care of the customer. Gerbing warranties all electrical components of their garments to be free from factory defects in materials and workmanship for the lifetime of the garment. Non-electrical components of their clothing are warranted for one year after purchase. You can also return any product purchased from Gerbing for a full refund within 30 days of the purchase. Temp-controllers are warranted from factory defect for three years from the initial purchase.
Price:
The price of Gerbing’s G3 Heated Gloves with Microwire is $139.95, which includes a glove/insole harness and fused battery harness; quite a deal. Thermostats can be purchased separately for $69.95 and are another excellent investment in your comfort.
Final Thoughts:
Gerbing has really outdone themselves this time. I assure you that once you experience Microwire, you will agree. Heated gloves are not only an investment in comfort, but an investment in safety when riding in cold temperatures. Wind chill and humidity cause discomfort and additional danger as reaction times are slowed while decreasing hand and body movement. Absolutely, Gerbing’s G3 Gloves with Microwire are worth the investment and will make cold weather riding more enjoyable.

How are these in the rain? My old gloves get soaked. Do you know of any that are water proof? Add A Comment You must be logged in to leave a comment. |
