First Impressions

An essential accessory for any motorcycle owner, Battery Tender Plus (BTP) means your battery is ready to go when you are, and the microchip technology will extend the life of your battery.  It is compact, lightweight, and the aluminum chassis suggests durability.  This battery tender is designed to accommodate the demanding charging requirements of lead-acid batteries and should safely charge all lead acid battery types. Consult your Motorcycle Owners Manual to determine the type of battery in your motorcycle.

Features and Operation

BTP is a 1.25 amp output battery charger designed to fully charge and maintain a 12 volt lead acid motorcycle battery at proper storage voltage.  The micro-chip technology built into the BTP applies the correct peak charge, then automatically maintains the battery at the perfect float voltage, which virtually eliminates battery destroying sulfation.

The BTP comes in a powder coated aluminum chassis, weighs 2.7 lbs., and measures 4.88” wide x 3.25” deep x 2.88” high.  Interconnection options include: alligator clips, fused ring terminals and quick disconnect DC output cable harness.

The BTP is fully automatic, which means that at the end of the regular charging cycle, it will automatically switch output voltage to a safe, storage or float level that eliminates the need to constantly check on the condition of the battery.
It will deliver full output power with input AC line voltages as low as 90 VAC.  When the AC power is disconnected, the BTP will draw zero current from the battery.

This battery tender implements a four step charging system.Qualification or initialization:

  • The BTP insures safety by verifying battery status prior to charging.
  • Bulk Charge: BTP provides constant current at full power while raising battery voltage to 14.4.Vdc.
  • Absorption Charge: The BTP holds voltage at 14.4 Vdc and forces current to fully charge the battery.
  • Float Charge: BTP maintains the fully charged battery at 13.2 Vdc while connected.

The BTP is easy to connect to the battery, and the indicator lights provide feedback so the operator knows what is going on with the battery during the charging process. There are two lights – red and green – on the face of the BTP, which provide the operator with five useful groups of information.  When the red light is flashing, the BTP is functioning properly however, if it continues to flash, there is a problem between the charger and battery connections or the BTP is connected to a dead battery.  When the red light is on, the BTP is in process of fully charging the battery.  A red light accompanied by a flashing green light means the battery is charged to greater than 80%.  A solid green light means the BTP is in the maintenance mode of charge and will continue indefinitely or until disconnected. If red and green lights alternate flashing, the battery is most likely sulfated or there is a poor electrical connection between the charger DC output leads and the battery posts.

The BTP comes with safety features. It is spark proof, short circuit protected, reverse polarity protected and temperature compensated.

Spark proof means the charger will not generate output voltage unless DC output leads are properly connected to a battery.  Short circuit protection means the charger will sustain indefinite short circuit connection across DC output terminals. Reverse polarity protected means damage will not result to battery or charger, even if DC output leads are connected to the opposite polarity battery post.  Temperature compensated means that output voltage is increased in cold climates to keep the battery from being undercharged and reduces the voltage in high temperature climates to protect the battery from overcharge.

Deltran Corporation, manufacturer of Battery Tender Plus, provides a general limited warranty for up to 10 years.  This is remarkable in this day and age.  But if you take care of your Battery Tender Plus by avoiding misuse, disassembly of the chassis or modifications of the electrical connections, Deltran Corporation will replace or repair the charger at the discretion of Deltran for up to 10 years.
